ROCKY RIVER, Ohio (April 30, 2023) -- For Pirate Track & Field, the week of April 24 included a Wednesday Senior Night sweep of the Westlake Demons (boys 93-49, girls 97-46) and the Pirates posting solid performances in Friday's Avon Reynolds Invitational [
results].
On Wednesday, the boys got a lift from junior Nicolas DiSalvo as they upped their season mark to 4-0. DiSalvo placed first in the 200-meter dash; he took second in the 100. He logged personals bests in both events. The River girls won 12-of-17 events. Junior Mary Sollars filed two of those wins. She won the 100-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash.
The programs honored their senior athletes after the twin wins over Westlake. River's 2023 seniors: Majid Abuaun, Kieran Boetger, Guillaume Carroll, Luke Dorenkott, Clare Duffy, Megan Durkin, Kasey Flowers, Kelly Foster, Greg Ganor, Tessa Gray, Magdalena Greco, Ethan Hazra, Alex Kovacs, Isaac Linville, Sophia Loparo, Julia Mafrici, Emma Maher, Nathyn Marius, Cara McKenna, Blair Pichola, Alaya Price, Ella Rochester, Anna Rouphail, Demis Salivaris, Amelia Stalzer, Ana Vladescu, and Zachary Wilson.
On Friday at Mark Wahlberg Chevrolet Stadium in Avon, the Double-R boys placed 5th in a field of 17 teams. The Buccaneers scored 53 points, getting a win from Majid Abuaun in the 800-meter run, a win in the 4x800-meter relay (Guillaume Carroll, Henry Lange, Grant Preto, Abuaun), a third in the 4x400 (Preto, Lange, Carroll, Abuaun), and a fourth in the pole vault (A.J. Ritvo). Abuaun's 800 time (1:56.4) and the 4x8 time (7:57.7) marked new top-5s in program history; the 4x8 performance made for a new meet record.
The Pirate girls scored 85 points to earn bronze in Avon. Only Avon (98) and Twinsburg (96) eclipsed Rocky River's tally. Brianna Chaves placed 2nd in the 3200 with a time of 11:54. The River girls won the 4x8 and 100 hurdles (Sollars), were runner-up finishers in the 1600-meter run (Katie Stirm), 300 hurdles (Ellie Harkins), and long jump (Morgyn Cruz). The Pirates placed third in the 800 (Grace Lavelle) and 100 hurdles (Harkins).
