Pirates sweep Panthers in rainy GLC conquest

RR Track & Field

ROCKY RIVER, Ohio -- The Pirates ran, threw, and leapt their way to a sweep over Great Lakes Conference foe Elyria Catholic Wednesday. Battling rainy conditions throughout, Rocky River defeated EC 93-44 on the boys side and 127-15 on the girls.

The River boys (2-0, 2-0 GLC) were victorious in 13-of-17 events. The Pirates swept the four relays and garnered gold in nine individual events. Junior Alex Kovacs was in on three of the winning relays (4x100-meter, 4x200, 4x400). Sophomore Grant Preto was in for a quarter on the 4x8 while also winning the 400-meter run and the long jump. Sophomore Owen Kleckner swept the 110- and 300-meter hurdles.

The Pirate girls (2-0, 2-0) took 15-of-17 events. They claimed all four relays and 11 individual events. River swept first-second-third in nine events. Sophomore Morgyn Cruz earned top-3 finishes in a trio of individual events (first-long jump, second-100H, third-200). Six other Double-R athletes (Madie Shoaf: discus-1, high jump-2; Caroline Sidoti: high jump-1, 100-2; Maeve Kelly: pole vault-1, 300H-1; Ava Meredith: 300H-3, 100H-3; Ellie Harkins: 100H-1, 300H-2; Emily Morris: discus-2, shot put-1) registered multiple top-3 finishes.

"I thought the kids performed well under adverse weather conditions," said boys head coach Mark Hogya.

Rocky River is slated to return to action Friday at the Ranger Relays hosted by Lakewood High School. River took fourth (boys) and third (third) in last year's relay event at Lakewood Stadium.
